Some More About Me and My Books by Cliff Popkey

Okay and we’re back. I feel like we just stepped away for a commercial break. I should have had and ad running my latest book adventure. I have recently signed a contract to publish a book with Saga Books. I know they aren’t a big publisher but then I’m not a big author, yet. I was impressed though by the fact that my editor/coach is a New York Times bestselling author in her own right. She was also the one who the publisher asked to read my query and the three chapters I submitted with it. I hope now that she’s got the whole manuscript, Note: the publishers and big time authors don’t call it a book until it’s on a bookshelf. You got to know the lingo in order to play the game. Anyway, I’m hoping she is still impressed. I think she will be.

The title of my soon to be published book is Apollo Road. There isn’t any significance to the title other than it’s the name of a road that a serial killer lives on. The books premise is, What would you do if a psychopathic serial killer decided to make you his best friend? The books main character gets to find out. As the story progresses you’ll find out this psychopath isn’t your everyday run of the mill nut case, just until you find out all about, “Bill”.

I’m hoping it’s released before Christmas, but I haven’t a clue as to what the publishers thinking. As the publication date draws closer, I’ll be sure to let you when you can buy a copy.

So have you downloaded any books from Smashwords? I know some people have. the FREE BOOK CODES are:

RQ93W The Fishing Trip—A Ghost Story
QA46C Reprisal! The Eagle Rises
LB86W Pirates Plunder-A Nate Nevwas Adventure
WZ97D Reprisal! The Eagle’s Gauntlet

I promised to talk about my books and here is a good time to do so. See the second book the free book list-Reprisal! The Eagle Rises. It was that huge book that was actually five books. I’ve got three written, the second one is on the free book list Reprisal! The Eagle’s Gauntlet. The third book in the series,I hope to have published by Christmas as well but I ‘ll wait to tell you about that one. Let’s take a look at the first book in the series Reprisal! The Eagle Rises. Yeah, it’s a thriller. it’s also received five stars from each of the four reviewers.

Here’s the back cover pitch: After America suffers the two largest terrorist attacks in history, billionaire business man Steven Howard takes the war on terror to terrorists by creating a private army disguised as corporate security.

Howard and Charles (Chip) Clarett, newly retired Chairman of the Joint Chiefs and an ex-Marine Corps General) begin tracking down the terrorist faction responsible for the attacks.

What they discover is that newly elected President Alan Starks and his administration are inexplicably refusing to go after the real terrorists, proving the true threat to the country is from within.

As Howard and Clarett seek out the terrorists, they discover that terrorism worldwide is controlled by a sinister group called the Brotherhood of the Sword.

Comprised of the rich and powerful elites of the Middle East and Islamic fundamentalist clergy, the group is convinced they can bring about worldwide Kalafah under the Shiite sect of the religion–If only they can bring down the western powers…Starting with America and Israel.

The true depth of the involvement in American politics is revealed when the hunt for terrorists turns to banking records, and Howard and Clarett follow the money trail to the steps of the White House.
The Battle lines are drawn as the White House plots to place more and more of the country under its control, while reducing or eliminating the role of the Constitution and the Bill of Rights.

Presidents Starks actions force Howard and Clarett to open a second front in their own personal war on terror–a political front fraught with scandal and no holds barred politics of personal destruction; where the winner gains control of the White House and the United States.

The story moves along a brisk pace and there are twists and turns you’ll never see coming and in the end, you’ll be wanting more.Which by the way there is more with Reprisal! The Eagles Gauntlet.

I self published, Reprisal! The Eagle Rises after I got ripped off by a so-called publisher affiliated with AIG. They just wanted my money and nothing else. It’s a hang on by the seat of your pants kind of story that delivers what I’m promising and you can get it for FREE from Smashwords or for just.99 cents at Kindle. By the way, you may have noticed that I’m writing the title to my book quite a few times in this blog. It's to demonstrate how you can promote yourself while blogging. You just have to blog about yourself to pull it off. How ‘d I do? Too much? No, I don’t think so. What book am I hoping you down load and tell all of your friends and family about today? Reprisal! The Eagle Rises.

I dedicated the book in part to my older brother Richard who died of cancer in 2004(?) I try not to dwell on the fact. He was a history professor, teacher, world traveler, fluent in five languages and a real spy. I’d tell you all about him but then I’d have to kill you all and I haven’t the time to chase you all down so in an effort to save myself, I’ll just say he was very smart five doctorates and seven degrees. He caught diplomas like I used to catch footballs. I dedicated the book to him because he had been warning the family, friends and anyone who would listen about the threat posed by the radical Islamists. at Twelve years old he introduced me to Aramco the Saudi Royal family’s oil business and Saudi Arabia. They are not nice, though our government keeps sucking up to them for their oil. It ‘s part of the premise of the book. The other premise, is an age-old truism, that General Clarett states fairly early in the book,

You can’t negotiate from a position of weakness, son,” the General stated patronizingly to the younger man. “You can only surrender from it.”

Yeah it’s politically charged but a great read. if you dare.

The series takes you through the buildup to world war three between Iran and America with a pending invasion of the American Southwest by a huge mercenary army of the disadvantaged from Central and South America, but I’m getting way ahead of myself. Reprisal! The Eagle Rises is an almost out of control thrill ride that will definitely leave begging for more. next we’ll talk about my favor character, Nate Nevwas. He’s the lead in Pirates Plunder. My third book that ended up fourth due a publishing error by me. Oh yeah, he’s free too for a limited time and I’ve corrected the publishing error. I’ve had several people, (publishers tell me the story is great-totally original) tell how much they enjoyed reading it so it’ll get picked up soon, I hope.

I hope to get more feed back, thank you very much those who have commented, I appreciate it. Please keep on commenting and keep on reading the books.

God Bless, Cliff Popkey

Intro To My Books by Cliff Popkey

Hey there, let’s get stated with some basic info about me that may help you understand how I came to be an author. I’m medically retired, something about a nerosystem failure brought on by too many concussions and a genetic failure that cause me to be susceptible to blood clots. I’ve had eight concussions, five from playing football, at one time I was hopeful my suspect skills on the grid iron would lead to a free college education and then to a life of wealth playing in the NFL. Several childhood friends made it to big college game and one made it to the pros, but that wasn’t to be for me, God had a different plan, but I digress. Five concussions from football, two from life, just hitting my head on dumb things and one from my older sister who when I was seven and she was ten, decided my head looked like a softball and whacked it as hard as she could with a baseball bat. Oh, you gotta love that sibling rivalry.
I wasn’t ready to retire, I’d just struggled through two businesses failing and I was recently divorced. I must have done something right because I managed to meet a new woman who became my wife, Donna, and she convinced me to accept the fact that I was in desperate need and should take the disability retirement. She convinced me that we could survive on her income while I battled the Social Security Administration for what turned out to be three long years. So there I was, retired and being a voracious reader, I quickly went through all of the novels that I hadn’t read by my favorite authors and then I went through a number of authors I had just discovered only to one day, a year later, discover I was out of good authors to read. I was bored with TV, movies and just staring at the walls, so I took the leap and started reading lots of authors I had never heard of. I was quickly convinced that I could write better than many of the, what I call the second tier, authors. You might call them Journeymen authors. They can be men or women doesn’t matter. Anyway, I had toyed with the idea of becoming an author when I was laid up after almost having my foot severed by a huge industrial lawn mower, shortly after high school. Thus the non-existent college career majoring in football. it is also a story Ill share with you as we go along, if you chose to become one of my followers. I spend three years struggling to walk again and while I was laid up, I read a lot and I took a creative writing course as part of my short lived college days. I was very creative but I was very inexperienced in life, yeah try telling that to any teenager, I dare you.
The writing I presented to publishers was really quite bad. I wrote it with lots of passion but failed miserably at grammar, spelling, context, sentence structure and … well you get the picture. I got a hundred rejections and a job in an appliance store. Then life got in the way as a family came along with kids and a mortgage. I went on to careers in trucking, warehousing, insurance sales, trash removal, landscaping, carpentry, home improvement sales, building, mobile home sales, politics-I’m reformed, car sales and driving cabs. But I didn’t stop writing, I just wrote for myself. I was a closet writer so to speak. As the years went by I kept reading and reading and reading. Slowly I learned how to write by reading good writers. I still couldn’t tell you if I’m using a dangling participle? Am I?
When I retired and suddenly had time on my hands I started writing in earnest. I decided since I wasn’t going to be able to work outside the home, I need to find something to do at home to keep my sanity and make a few bucks. Writing has fit that bill perfectly. I spend most days writing for ten to sixteen hours and now and then I’ll write around the clock. I take my laptop on trips because I’ll write while I’m hanging out waiting for flights or setting in rest stops taking a break from driving. But as this quotes states, “
What no wife of a writer can ever understand is that a writer is working when he’s staring out of the window. ~Burton Rascoe
I am always writing. I am very lucky that my wife understands and is encouraging me to write. I think she’s just hoping I make it big, so she can go shopping, without me telling her how much she can spend. Yeah, like that works.
So where was I, oh yeah, so I write all the time and I have seven books I have self published to prove it. When I decided to actually write something to share with other people and not just the family dog, I wrote a monster of a first book. I was a 175,000 plus words. The first editor I sent it to told me he’d charge me ten thousand dollars to help me rewrite it so that it was saleable. And oh by the way, it would have to be made into at least three books. I didn’t have ten grand to have him tell me how bad it was, so I took his critique to heart and started reading books on how to write novels and took several online classes, then took another college creative writing class only to have the professor tell me that I didn’t write a bad story; just my mechanics were poor. Just goes to show you that my high school teachers didn’t do me any favors by not making me work harder or at least try to inspire me more. I got lots of free passes because I was good at catching football passes no matter which side of the line of scrimmage I was on.
So my first book became five books now, three of which are completely finished and I’m still working on the last two, but it also became my second book published. The first book I had published is titled: The Fishing Trip-A Ghost Story. My daughter said she wasn’t interested in reading action/adventure books. So as a challenge, I decided to write a horror story. It’s about four friends who are on their annual fishing trip to Lake Michigan for the salmon run and how they, despite knowing better, stay out on the lake well beyond dark. As they finish catching their limit they discover that they can no longer see the light from the Ludington Light House and all of their instruments have failed. So they start trying to reach shore by dead reckoning. Shortly they are alarmed to discover they have gotten turned around somehow and the light is behind them, so they turn around and head for the light, only it winks out after a while and once again they are completely lost on the huge lake.
Now it gets real interesting because they spy an old paddle wheel ferry in the near distance and make for it only to find their is seemingly no one on board. I’d tell you more, but it will ruin it for you when you read it. Suffice to say, it has gotten five stars from several authors and reviewers and only one three star because it wasn’t Steven Kingish enough for their taste. It’s a good read for the young reader as well as the adult. You should check it out, since it is free for the next two weeks. It is a FREE book at Smashwords.com, in fact, four of my seven books are FREE on Smashwords. Here are the FREE book codes:

Getting To Know Me

Getting to know me-Cliff Popkey/author
I am a man of many faces. I’ve had so many different occupations in my life I don’t know where to begin. So I’ll just say I’m experienced. I’ve been a worker doing the lowest of jobs and I’ve been the general manger who was responsible for the whole operation but didn’t get the big bucks. I’ve been a Politian, though I’m now reformed. I’ve been the business owner and made the big bucks and I’ve been the business owner who watch it all collapse, taking me down with it.
I’ve been up, down, inside, and outside, spindled and mutilated. And yet I’m still standing despite the scars. Now I’m an author. I guess I like challenges. When I was a teenager I was told the only way I’d ever be an author was if I went to college and studied literature. That meant spending another four years doing things I had no interest in. Talk about a challenge. It was one challenge I failed at. Well, for me college was the longest two hours of my life, after I was hurt on a summer job and couldn’t play football anymore, I had no interest in college. Football was all I dreamed about as teenager, but God had other plans. Maybe I wasn’t that good at football or maybe I was. The one thing I do know is I’ve gotten a whole lot better as the years have passed. While in college I let the professors tell me, I couldn’t be a writer. Like the doctors, I almost let tell me I wouldn’t walk again. But I did walk and I did at least try to play football again. It took three years to make it onto the field again but I did it.
After that I found once I stopped believing the other people who did their best to talk me down, I could do whatever I really wanted to do. Now that, by it’s self was a trick. Because deciding what I really wanted to do proved to be something that was very difficult indeed. It took most of my life to figure it out. It took me years to understand that I have a gift for making people feel at ease around me and that if I had a good product, I could sell it to almost anyone. That was the supposed fatal flaw, I could sell almost anyone. But I wouldn’t sell everyone cause I didn’t push everyone to buy, I was told I was too nice by numerous slimy sales managers. They were wrong; this nice guy won national awards for selling roofing and for selling preowned manufactured homes one year after another for five years straight. I think I did it because of those other people who said I couldn’t do it.
Writing is like for me. The more I hear how tough it is to get an agent or publishing contract, the harder I try to write. I’ve vastly improved since the first book, “The Fishing Trip-A Ghost Story”. I self published it after three dozen agents refused to represent me. I wonder if it’s because I’m not a college graduate? Oh well, their loss. I will write a best seller and soon. I can feel it.
For me, life is all about persevering, never giving up. Never accepting what they say are my limits. When I was twenty, I received more than a hundred rejections and I’m still receiving them. But you see I believe I can do this. I believe I will be a best seller. I’m not a perfectly polished writer with perfect prose or even good punctuation, but I am very passionate. I am willing to learn and I am going to be a successful author whose name is known. I just am. I will persevere through the challenge and I will make it. If you develop the same attitude, it will happen for you, too. Write what you know and write it with passion, set the world on fire with your dreams –Chris Keys! Oh by the way, I’m retiring Chris Keys, it’s a pen name and I’ll be writing under my real name Cliff Popkey from now on, so look for Cliff Popkey AKA Chris Keys. “Write what you know, write it with passion and set the world on fire with your dreams.” –Cliff Popkey

It been a long time since I posted a blog here. In fact I'd forgotten I even had a blog site. I just got bored with the whole idea of having to write about what others found interesting, like celebrities and such nonsense. But I no longer feel I can keep silent about the state of our country.
Have you looked around. I mean really looked around at it? Probably not. You've been too busy watching America's got talent or some other crap. We have major cities decaying into oblivion. What once was our pride and joy, the manufacturing centers of this country are now rapidly be coming ghost towns filled with blite, grumbling infrastructure and buildings. Hundreds of homes sit vacant across the midwest.
Its happening not only in what is referred to as the rust belt but in the south as well and out in California. Sure some Americans are still trying but our government isn't. They've quit on us for some reason and I think it's personal greed since nearly every Senator and Congressman or woman are in the top one percent of earners in thie country. They have the mentality of misers and hoarders and actually think that tax dollars are theirs and tax cuts is stealing from the government. Don't they know that the government is supposed to be the people? Too many of them vote for whatever, without reading what it is they are voting for because they were promised campaign cash in return. Talk about a conflict of interest. Not to mention by any common sense definition, its bribery. I am afraid for my country. it's begining a death spiral as the cities become waste lands controled by crooked politians. In private business when something doesn't work, IE: make money, you change to something else. In the current poltical climate our government isn't working and yet they continue doing the same thing over and over. Why? Just look at the list of donors to the two parties, they keep recieving stymulas money for failed businesses and then turn around and donate back to the political party or the in many cases the current president's war chest for reelection. It's campaign bribery!
Have you noticed that our government doesn't care that our borders are as porus as they were when this country was founded inthe seventeen hundreds. Are we to become the North American Union with Mexico leading the way? Why? They can't even feed themselves or provide jobs worth having, yet our politians keep holding the door open for them and our banks keep laundering their drug money More bribes.
Look, I'm all for legal immigration but this open borders crap, is just that, crap. How many terrorists have crossed into the country and are waiting for the signal to attack? How many? We don't know because our governement won't pay any attention to our boarders. You better vote in November, because your lives depend on it. Just look at what has happened to us it the last three years. Is that what you really want. Governemnt health care, no jobs, no borders, no enforcement of the law if your of a certain skin color and no accountability in Washington. China is buying huge portions of the Rust Belt, why? What does China know that we don't?
There is no nation on earth who can fight a war against us and win, so they are tearing us down from the inside. it's everywhere you look. The Chinesse are buying our land, the Muslims are trying to undermine the government and replace it with Shiria Law-Islamic religious law and the Mexican's are doing all they can to fill the Southwest with Hispanic people so that they can claim squaters rights and let La Raza- a racist group-take over and return the land to Mexico. Which they sold to us by the 1840's look it up. What's next sell Alaska back to Russia? I'm sure the American Tribes would like their land back as well. Get real people, we can't fix what happened hundreds of years ago by destorying ourselves today. The people calling for such action are either stupid, power hungry themselves and think by doing so they will benefit or they are suicidal and should just end it all and let the rest of us alone. Okay, enough complaining, next time I'll make real suggestions that we need to follow if we're going to survive as a nation.first thing will be jobs and taxes. Get ready you won't like it.       Chris Keys
